VIVA LA BEAVER! Beaver Causes a Stir in Duke Park, NC
Duke Park neighbors rallied around a beaver whose dam was turning Larry Crabtree's residence into waterfront property.

On January 21, neighbor Marty Jarrell alerted the email listserv that she had received a letter from NCDOT regarding a beaver inhabiting the wooded area bordered by Glendale, Washington and I-85. The beaver's dam was clogging a drainage pipe, and the water was forming a pond in several backyards. The letter requested permission from Jarrell—whose home borders the wooded area—to remove the beaver. Methods cited included "crushing traps, necksnares and explosives," but no humane alternatives. Several other neighbors chimed in to say that they, too, had received the letter.

Even the neighbors most adversely affected by the beaver's activities did not favor killing the beaver or blowing up the dam. Due to our neighborhood's past interactions with NCDOT, there was little sentiment for trusting them to make recommendations in our interest. There was also suspicion that perhaps there were other factors involved - neighbors had complained about flooding in that area when I-85 construction began two years ago. It was also brought up that perhaps more yard waste was getting into the system as people have dropped out of the city's yard waste program. Touring the area, DPNA president Barry Ragin saw evidence of leaves and debris being dumped in the area, too. The drainage pipe was ringed with rocks by NCDOT in the hopes of discouraging the beaver, but he just built his dam in front of the rocks.

CLEANER CARS, CLEANER AIR
One of four Priorities for a Healthy Washington State

Cars are part of our daily life, but automobile emissions are taking a toll on our health and our environment. Automobiles are the number one source of Washington’s air pollution. Clean car standards will reduce toxic and global warming emissions from autos by giving Washingtonians cleaner car choices. With these standards, all new cars sold in Washington after 2008 will emit less toxic air pollution, while saving on fuel costs and starting to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

GREAT QUOTES
"Anything else you're interested in is not going to happen if you can't breathe the air and drink the water. Don't sit this one out. Do something. You are by accident of fate alive at an absolutely critical moment in the history of our planet."--Carl Sagan

An Open Letter to Fashion Magazines
Environmental disaster is in our near future if we do not start changing our ways immediately. Sooner rather than later EVERYONE is going to realize that recycling alone is not enough.

Young people need to open their eyes to environmentally friendly alternatives, since they will be the ones who will be affected later in life according to the habits they develop now.
But convincing people to care does not have to be so depressing.

Katy Van - Beaver Power Bartender
I first came across the Beaverpower t-shirts in a magazine about 3 years ago. I work part time as a bartender and I knew it would make an awesome shirt to wear at work. I got online and after discovering the real mission behind the catchy phrase I knew I had to have one. I too feel that a healthy environment is an important crusade. Beaverpower has come up with a clever way to break the ice and get the conversation started for conservation.

BRILLIANT BEAVERS BUILD HOUSE MADE OF MONEY
GREENSBURG, Louisiana (AP) -- These eager beavers had a whole
new slant on money laundering.

A bag of bills stolen from a casino was snapped up by beavers
who wove thousands of dollars in soggy currency into the sticks
and brush of their dam on a creek in eastern Louisiana.

"They hadn't torn the bills up. They were still whole," said Maj. Michael
Martin of the East Feliciana Parish sheriff's office.

WWW.BEAVERPOWER.COM NEEDS YOU!
BEAVER POWER IS A FABULOUS, FUN AND FASHIONABLE LINE OF CLOTHES THAT PROMOTES RENEWABLE CLEAN ENERGY…

…made by Solar power, the Hydrogen fuel cell, Wind and Minihydro electric power, and the use of Hybrid Electric and Fuel cell cars. We promote the protection of the environment and specifically, Beavers and the wetlands they live in. When a Beaver makes a pond by damming running water, it becomes the home of thousands of species of animals plants and insects, and when Beavers are chased away or killed by irate, exhausted and short sighted farmers and land-owners, all those other life forms lose their home too.

BEAVER POWER! is the concept that with a huge mass marketing campaign, it is possible to educate people world-wide about Solar Power, the Hydrogen Fuel Cell, Wind Generators and Minihydro Electric Power, which will lead to actual use. These new technologies work just fine and don't cause pollution. Which means no carbon and cancerous gasses. Cleaner air, water soil and food. Less cancer and bronchial problems from breathing crap. Healthier humans and all life in general.

Beavers:Wetlands and Wildlife by Sharon Brown
Beavers are more than intriguing animals with flat tails and lustrous fur. American Indians called the beaver the "sacred center" of the land because this species creates rich habitats for other mammals, fish, turtles, frogs, birds and ducks. Since beavers prefer to dam streams in shallow valleys, much of the flooded area becomes wetlands. Such wetlands are cradles of life with biodiversity that can rival tropical rain forests. Almost
half of endangered and threatened species in North America rely upon wetlands.

Besides being a keystone species, beavers reliably and economically maintain wetlands that can sponge up floodwaters (the several dams built by each colony also slows the flow of floodwaters), prevent erosion, raise the water table and act as the "earth's kidneys" to purify water. The latter occurs because several feet of silt collect upstream of older beaver dams, and toxics, such as pesticides, are broken down in the wetlands that beavers create. Thus, water downstream of dams is cleaner and requires less treatment.

Excerpt from: "Making Environmentalism Fun and Sexy" By Jessica Grajczyk
“The imperative task for those who want to stress a different set of values is to make the struggle for social change fun and sexy.”
-Sut Jhally

The implementation strategy follows the framework of the social marketing business plan. There are three goals that social marketing seeks to achieve. These are: raising awareness, changing attitudes, and encouraging action (Olderman).

A good example of a company that has done all three of these is called BEAVER POWER. They're one of the first pioneering companies to brand and merchandise renewable energy to the mass market using pop culture and fashion. They try to get free publicity in the mass media and have been successful so far. They were featured in the mainstream fashion magazine called JANE, and have since had a number of articles in other publications, which led to an invitation to tour with Lollapalooza.

While touring with this well-known concert series, they got front man of Jane’s Addiction, Perry Farrell, to wear their shirt. BEAVER POWER! is getting people’s attention in an effort to change their attitudes about power sources, which will hopefully encourage them to abandon the old sources for the betterment of the environment. (BEAVER POWER!
interview)

The company knows what kind of demographic they want to reach and promotes BEAVER POWER! through pop culture media such as magazines and rock concerts.

A Greener Building : by Nino De La Rosa
Hello everyone. Nino from the band Driving The Effect here. Like most bands that are trying to make it, but have not received that nice cushy contract, every member of my band has a day-job. Throughout the workweek I work as an Electrical Designer for a local engineering firm. I know…I know…. Computer geek! But it is much different then that. Once I got deep into the engineering field I realized that as an individual I could make a difference, and help the environment. The company that I work for prides itself on working with clients, and letting them know the benefits of designing buildings that are environment friendly. These buildings are called green buildings.
