letter to the editor

Hi, Im Lauren. Im seventeen and i live in Salt Lake City, Utah, and
believe it or not, I am one of few non-mormons in this state...we
are a dying breed, i am aware.

Here in Salt Lake our environment is fair, I'd say.  We are the land
of the granolas and the "out-doorsy" type folks.  Although we do
have many a mountain and snow to spare, we have a lot of  coal
based power plants as well as the copper mines which can give
us a nasty layer of scum that lingers over our city.  Other than the
basic and general knowledge of a local Utah youth, I am not very
aware of our pollution standings in comparison to that of other states.

The average teenager here isn't as involved as they should be in
our environment.  Our population is increasing rapidly and has
noticibly ever since our hosting of the olympics in 2002, which was
sadly enough - probably was the greatest highlight of excitement in
Utah's entire history, although it is something to be proud of.

Salt Lake is becoming more dense and compact and therefore
creating negative effects within our environment and its limited
resources.  We need to expand ourselves phsically as well as
mentally when we approach situations relating to a new means of
maintaining the life around us and spreading the word on
reuseable energy ideas and bringing the concepts to real life.  I
believe we should first start with getting our young-adults and
youth envolved.  We need to start preserving the present world we
are growing up in and  the world we'll be living in tomorrow.
